solidThinking, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of Inspire 2018.3, is a concept design tool that uses topology, topography, lattice, and gauge optimization to produce structural shapes in response to loads. The resulting shapes are polymeshes you can export to other computer-aided design tools as a source of inspiration for your designs. You can also generate .stl files for rapid prototyping.

The following features and enhancements were added for Altair Inspire software version 2018.3.

PolyNURBS Improvements
- You can now create PolyNURBS surfaces using the PolyNURBS Create tool.
- The new Pave tool allows you to generate PolyNURBS surfaces on optimized results.
- The Bridge tool has been modified to allow selection of multiple faces to bridge.
- When editing PolyNURBS, faces and edges can now be dragged and merged to other PolyNURBS objects.
- You can now import .obj files, which are automatically converted into PolyNURBS cages.
Material Import
- Materials can now be imported and saved in the Parts and Materials table.
Systems Tool
- A new Systems tool has been added to the ribbon which allows you to create locally-oriented systems. These systems can be referenced from loads and supports microdialogs.
- Result Vector Visualization
Altair Inspire now allows you to view result vectors for displacement and normal modes results.
- Sum Forces in Force Explorer
Visualization of contact forces now has the option Sum Forces: At Contact Region. This reduces the number of contact arrows to a minimal set and also lets you see the force magnitude as text. Additionally, the Force Explorer has a new Jump to Contact Event option that makes it easier to jump between contact events. When animation playback is paused, you can jump to the first, previous, next, or last contact event.
- Motion Animation Playback
The animation toolbar now has Previous and Next buttons with an auto-repeat feature, allowing you to step through the animation frame-by-frame by holding down the button. In addition, the Animation Settings now includes an option to Reverse Playback. You can also skip frames during playback using the new Increment By option

Hierarchical Organization of Exported MDL Files

When exporting motion models to MotionView in MDL format, you will now see organizational improvements such as:
- Motors, actuators, springs, and motion contacts are exported as separate systems in the hierarchy.
- The parameters for profile functions are now stored in datasets, as are controller PID gains.
- Use of the Compliant Joint approach for joint flexibility.
- Marker usage has been kept to a minimum.

These changes should make it easier for MotionView users to understand what the motion model contains by visual inspection of the Model Browser and graphics.

Enhancements

Additional enhancements include:

- Friction: You can now define frictional values for contacts.
- Show Mesh Intersections: The software now provides visualization of problem areas during meshing.
- Time Reporting During Motion Analysis: When analyzing the motion of your model, the current simulation time and percentage complete are now reported in the status bar in the bottom left corner of the application.
- Units Specification During Model Export: The Export button in the Run Motion Analysis settings now allows you to specify the units set for the exported file (.mdl or .mspy), rather than needing to change it in the Preferences.
- Multiple File Selection During File Import: Multiple file selection is now allowed during file import operations. N15427

Using solidThinking Inspire is extremely easy, to start, the user can either use the simple sketching tools in Inspire to sketch an initial design. Alternatively, the user can also import an existing design that they would like to optimize. Next the user must select part of their model that they would like to optimize. This is called the design space. Next, the user must assign materials and loads to the model. As an optional step, users can then use advanced shape controls and manufacturing constraints to make sure their final part is optimized for manufacture. Inspire will then run through its process and export the ideal part based on all of the previous steps. Users can then control the results and export the design proposal.

OptiStruct is an industry proven, modern structural analysis solver for linear and non-linear structural problems under static and dynamic loadings.
